Our Approach to Dyslexia is Different

Reading and writing challenges can have many causes. Our occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists collaborate to identify your child's specific needs and build the skills necessary for success at school and beyond.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy directly targets underlying developmental and cognitive skills needed for reading and overall academic success. Utilizing a multisensory and holistic approach, occupational therapy supports reading and writing skills by targeting the following areas:

  • Oculomotor skills (saccades, visual scanning, etc.)

  • Reflex integration

  • Visual perceptual skills

  • Working memory

  • Handwriting

  • Interhemispheric communication

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Processing speed

  • Executive functioning skills (problem-solving skills, multiprocessing, attention, etc.)

  • Auditory processing (needed for phonological awareness)

Speech Therapy

Dyslexia is the result of a phonological processing deficit which falls under a LANGUAGE based disorder.

This presents as poor reading and spelling skills NOT related to cognition.

SLPs have a critical and direct role in supporting literacy outcomes.

Children with dyslexia benefit from speech therapy that addresses phonological awareness skills and offers a structured literacy approach.

You don’t have to choose between school services, a dyslexia program, or outpatient therapy. We can complement the services your child already receives by providing different therapeutic approaches, targeted interventions, and family-centered support to help them succeed.
